What I Learned Today!

  • gnomon /nomän/ - The gnomon is the part of a sundial that casts the shadow. We made these in science today :)

        NewImage

  • Melons really should be washed before cut. I have no idea why I’ve never done this! Think of the germs that are on the outside of a water melon or cantaloupe from people’s hands etc… GROSS! I know you don’t eat the outside of a melon but you touch it and if you are like me I slice my melon and throw the wedges into a bowl for eating so the outer skins do touch the flesh of other slices. I will wash melons from now on! Thank you to my school cooks :)

More tomorrow…

Wacky Wednesday!

IMG 1916

This is my cat’s bowl. He eats a grain free diet too and his meals usually revolve around a shredded chicken and other meat combination in a gravy (his favorite being pumpkin) occasionally containing veggies too. It tickles me that Eddy does’t like peas and cleans his bowl shiny leaving only the peas looking like they have been licked clean too :)

I love my wacky cat Eddy!

He’s a mean Quirkle player too!

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

What I Learned Today!

Hey there!

Wanna know what I learned today?

  • In New Jersey they have brought in a law that hopes to stop people from texting and walking at the same time. A fine of $85 is given for texting while walking, and according to sources, 117 tickets have been issued since March.

  • The troposphere is a atmospheric blanket made of various gasses that protects the Earth and is thicker over the equator (17 km thick) than over the poles (8 km thick) because the equator is warmer. The warmer the weather, the thicker the troposphere.

  • More on laws: Dumb Washington Laws - these are funny and have truth in them from days gone by!

What I Learned Today!

P1110509

Working in a classroom everyday with a teacher who is a fountain of knowledge has given me the opportunity to learn so much. In fact on a day basis I have mini revelations with the “stuff” that I honestly had no knowledge of and then learn about. Crazy huh, considering I work in a 2nd/3rd grade class.

Really did I pay NO attention when I was at school?! The older I get the more of an information junkie I become! But somedays in my classroom, I feel really quite dumb!

So… I thought it would be fun to share them with you each day in the hopes that you might learn something too AND it will help me to remember them. :)

So here goes with what I learnt today:

  • Caulk  /kôk/ – It’s like a sealant that goes around windows and baths and stuff.
  • Balk    /bôk/ – It’s a false/trick pitch in baseball
  • W.A.S.P. – stands for White Anglo Saxon Protestant

More tomorrow I hope!

WEEK 31!

Weight still up :( I want to loose 5 lbs over the next month to feel tip top and hunky dory before my trip to DC.

Gonna keep this post brief, Just finished baking my weekly batches of Paleo Herb Buns and Paleo Scones, with the added yumminess of a touch of paleo friendly jam/jelly to my scones this time! I was inspired by our lovely Cavegirl Angie with her Thumbprint Cookie Recipe… thanks Angie!

The weather is still holding out great for us here in the Pacific Northwest. SO if it looks like a good BBQ day then the meal plan will be ditched and the grill lit :)

Here is my meal plan…

Tuesday: BBQ ribs, chicken and beef kebabs with grilled broccoli and carrots.

Wednesday: Chili for grownups/Bolognese for kids over baked sweet potatoes.

Thursday: Brinner (Paleo Pancakes, bacon, sausage and fresh fruit salad) YUM!

Friday: Chicken, sausage and very veggie stir fry.

Saturday: Paleo Curry Night! (again as it didn’t happen last week as we BBQ’d)

I am beginning my quest to find the different and best iced and ice-creamed paleo friendly popsicles/lollies/desserts. It’s a chore but someone has to do it ;)

So far these are my favorite:

NewImage

I am so very VERY proud! It is so nice to see your kids publicly rewarded and acknowledged for their hard work.

Oh Oh OH, a bit more good news….

One of our favorite restaurants, Claim Jumper have put my favorite dish back on their menu…

IMG 1927

Make sure to request no sugar or butter on your sweet potato as it normally comes filled with both ;)

So this week…

I’m craving paleo buffalo chili so my wonderful hubby has promised to make a vat of it :) I LOVE chili and my hubby ;)

I feel like I can plug myself back into blogging and life beyond NHD for a while so I promise to blog more during the week! I have a few tips up my sleeve for helping with sticky baking problems and I do want to share my paleo thoughts of late and the latest on my paleo journey over on Northwest Cavegirls. 30 weeks paleo… wow!

Think I might even create a BBQ post too, I’m feeling inspired with this week’s nice weather forecast!

So without further ado…

Monday: Pork steaks, peaches and steamed veggies.

Tuesday: BBQ ( bacon wrapped shrimp and homemade buffalo burgers)

Wednesday: Chili for grownups/Bolognese for kids over baked sweet potatoes.

Thursday: Brinner (Pancakes, bacon, sausage and fresh fruit salad) YUM!

WEEK 29!

Weight on the upward spiral :( Need to get back in the pool and cut back on the snacking!!  I will try harder – I WILL TRY HARDER! Too much of a good thing is sometimes not such a good thing right? ;)

So… I have to be honest, last week’s meal planning was an epic fail! Thursday was the first day that I had the time, energy or inclination to make a home cooked meal! Seriously, reality kinda smacked me in the face at the beginning of the week, and OUCH it hurt ;) Thursday, I shopped and prepped dinner and was feeling very in control until I did the stupidest thing. Don’t ask me why but I put my spaghetti squashes in the oven to bake on a plastic baking tray!! Well you can imagine the mess and the smell OMGosh it was BAD!! I managed to salvage the squash and cooked them in the microwave but… AND we were entertaining too. Ah well it turned out ok in the end. Friday’s Brinner was a huge success and I bought a fresh pineapple which was delicious and I closed my eyes and reminisced about beautiful AMAZING Hawaii. We BBQ’d all weekend, ribs for my Roo and steaks for the Cavemen and Cavegirls :)

This week’s a tense one! My “caveman in the making” teenage son is competing in National History Day’s State Competition this weekend and after months of preparation, tons of hard work and much dedication he will be judged and interviewed with a hope of qualifying to go all the way to Washington DC as a National NHD entrant. The theme this year is “Revolution, Reaction and Reform and Jonathan’s website is built around his chosen topic “Nuclear Power – The Future of Energy”. His suit is hired, shoes polished, tour of local nuclear plant booked, mock interview scheduled and butterflies growing by the day. Please think good luck thoughts this coming Saturday – Thank YOU! If there were ever a kid who deserved to succeed it’s my cave kid :) Biased? YES very and super proud too!

Back to Paleo….

All this being said, I am hoping that this week is a little less overwhelming that last and I can pull my finger out and be supermom and house goddess. I have begun with a good start and have covered breakfasts and lunches for my cavekids for the week. Paleo buns and waffles at the ready. Waffles will be bagged and refrigerated and then my Junior High cavekid can pop one (or two) in the toaster in the morning (half asleep) and be set for a good morning with tons paleo brain power. Same cavekid fills a paleo bun full of good deli meats and takes his paleo lunch to school. He usual accompanies this with fresh or dried apple slices, handful of pistachio’s and a banana.

IMG 1923

Here is this week’s meal plan…

Monday: Cavegirl dinner out – maybe Mongolian Grill :) Cavemen are on their nuclear power plant adventure.

Tuesday: Sausage casserole, sweet potato fries and a side of steamed broccoli.

Wednesday: Chili/Bolognese over baked sweet potatoes.

Thursday: Chicken, sausage and very veggie stir – fry.

Friday: Pancakes, bacon and a side of fresh fruit salad (mango, pineapple, apples, grapes, bananas)

Saturday: Family (celebration/commiseration) dinner out!

Sunday: BBQ – ribs, steaks and salad – weather permitting (fingers crossed)

Here’s to a smooth and successful week, I hope you have a great week too!!

WEEK 28!

ALOHA!

The wanderer returns with a tan – YAY me ;)

We’ve had a wonderful time, visited Pearl Harbor, celebrated my 14th wedding anniversary with my Mr. Wonderful at a very festive Hawaiian Luau and swam with wild dolphins! Other than eating way too many dark chocolate macadamias and drinking a few too many cocktails we did very little else other than soak up the beautiful sun in the lagoon or around the pool. Gosh it was truly TRULY wonderful!

We caught fish and picked coconuts straight from the palm trees…

IMG 4268 IMG 4267

Ok maybe not but we did have a fabulous time :)

IMG 4205 P4160627

IMG 4257

Anyway… since coming back to the Pacific NW the weather has been fabulous. We have spent the weekend in the back garden and grilled each evening. I love the nice weather. The garden is all weeded, the garden furniture is out and the trampoline brushed off. Even our kitty Eddy has been allowed out to explore. I am so ready for the summer to be here!!

So I am back and refreshed and ready to get this week started! So without further a do…

Here is this week’s meal plan:

Monday: Kebabs done on the bbq. Chicken and bell peppers, shrimp wrapped in bacon, and baby buffalos on sticks, bbq’d sweet pots, salad and ELaD Thai Curry Coconut Dip

Tuesday: Spaghetti squash with buffalo meatballs (from ELaD)

Wednesday: Chicken and sausage very veggie stir-fry

Thursday: Grilled pork steaks and peaches with roasted veggies and sweet potato fries

Friday: BRINNER – Waffles, sausage & bacon with a side of fresh fruit salad (mango, strawberries, apples, grapes, bananas)

Saturday: Eat out :)

Sunday: Roasted beast and veggies!!

Have a fantastic week!!

Paleo Meal Plan Monday

WEEK 26!

I have good news and bad news. Bad news is that I only have 4 days on my meal plan this week, Good news… it’s because we head off for our Hawaiian vacation on Friday – YIPPEEHURRAY!

Having just bought the most awesome book Eat Like a Dinosaur, my youngest cavekid and I browsed and noted all the recipes that took our fancy. I have to say we could have post-it noted all the sweets and treats :) A number of the main dishes were a little too adventurous for my kids but maybe if I follow the books suggestions of including the kids in the choosing, buying, preparing and cooking of the dishes then this may entice them to try something new and out of their comfort zone.

Image 6

Here is this week’s meal plan…

Monday: Chicken nuggets, sweet potato fries with a side of apple and bacon slaw (all from Eat Like a Dinosaur)

Tuesday: Spaghetti with meatballs (from ELaD again)

Wednesday: Family dinner out!

Thursday: Chicken, sausage and very veggie stir – fry

Friday Breakfast: Waffles, sausage & bacon with a side of fresh fruit salad (mango, strawberries, apples, grapes, bananas

Some highlights of last week were making Angie’s Everyday Cookies.OMGosh to die for!!! My youngest was not convinced but the rest of the family are addicted!! Roo LOVED the Isernio’s Italian Chicken Sausage which we used in a few dishes last week. The stir-fry to the left below was one and then I also added it to a very tasty egg scramble too. It’s become a staple!!!

Image 8

We are battling flu in our house right now, but I hope to review some of my meals this week and we are hoping to make it to Amazon Grill one night for family dinner as Miss Roo was too sick to go yesterday :( Please send us healing and healthy vibes this week. Flu in Hawaii would be batter than flu in Seattle but what a shame that would be right?! Positive thinking!!!!

Have a great week!
